Chronology of Events during 2000s

   1980s | 1990s | 2000s

  • In April 200, CSTNET accessed to the State Internet Exchange Center Beijing Station with 155M capacity, realizing the interconnection between CSTNET and other nine networks in China. 
  • In May 2000, CSTNET hosted Chinese American Network Seminar (CANS' 2000). 
  • In May 2000, signed the Memorandum of Understanding on co-development of the Next Generation Internet (NGI) technology and applicaiton with the University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development (UCAID) which is the American INTERNET2 institution. 
  • In June 2000, the domestic Shuguang 2000-II Superserver with a capacity of 117 G FLOPS was introduced. 
  • In July 2000, CAS made the decision that CNIC exercises the function of CAS Informatization Office in its document YKFJZ [2000] No. 0319 of Notice to Adjustment of CAS Informatization Leading Group. CNIC, since then, took the responsibility of the planning and coordination of CAS informatization work under the leadership of CAS informatization Leading Group, Yan Baoping, Director of CNIC, was designated as the Director of CAS Informatization Office.
  • In September 2000, CAS decided to have network center restructed and incorporated into CNIC, and establish OA Technology and Applications Research Laboratory to continuously provide information service and technical supports for all departments of CAS. 
  • In November 2000, the band width of international lines of CSTNET was upgraded to 55M. 
  • In June 2001, 155M direct channel was established between CSTNET and CHINANET. 
  • In December 2001, the proposal of Scientific Database and Its Application System for key sub-project of CAS' informatization construction during the Tenth Five-Year Plan was accepted through feasibility demonstration and the project was launched from then on. 
  • In January 2002, CNIC set foot on Pilot Project of Knowledge Innovation Program, having itself oriented at CAS informatization construction, supporting force for operation and service, and the development base of NGI.
  • In March 2002, signed the Memorandum of Understanding with Mr. Fran Berman, the Director of San Diego Supercomputing Center (SDSC), at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) on a broad cooperation, which includes grid computing, high-performance computing, computing science and engineering applicaiton.
  • In March 2002, CNIC established North American mirror of Science Museums of China at Texas A&M University, and initiated the construction of China-US Virtual Science Center joining hands with A&M University and other entities, for establishment and sharing of China-US network science sources, scientific education platform and scientific research platform. 
  • In March 2002, CNIC joined in Pacific Rim Application Grid Middleware Assembly (PRAGMA) as one of the initiators. From then on, it organized and promoted wide exchange in grid technology and its application as well as cooperation based upon Scientific Data Grid among US, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Australia, Tailand, China and other areas. In May 2004, the Sixth PRAGMA Workshop was held in Beijing.
  • In March 2003, the implementation proposal of supercomputing and its applicatioins system for CAS' informatization construction during the Tenth Five-Year Plan was accepted through feasibility demonstration and the project was launched from then on. 
  • In May 2003, CAS held Conference for Launch and Report of "Emergency System for Video Conference" for Informatization Project during 'the Tenth Five-Year Plan' as well as for Report and Coordination of Joint Work Toward Anti-SARS. CAS Leaders in Beijing as well as the leaders and officials of General Office of CAS, Life Science and Biotechnology of CAS and Bureauof High-Tech Industry Development of CAS attended the conference at the main control room of CAS, while Vice President Jiang Mianheng and Secretary-General Xi Erwei were present at Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica.
  • In 2003, CAS introduced domestic Lenovo Deepcomp 6800 Cluster supercomputer with the capacity of 5,000 G FLOPS. 
  • In July 2003, CSTNET completed connecting and calibration of networks for 12 branches at Guangzhou, Shanghai, Wuhan, Kunming, Changchun, Hefei, Lanzhou, Shenyang, Chengdu, Xi'an, Xinjiang and Nanjing, etc. From then on, video conference systems for 12 branches of CAS were all put into service. 
  • In July 2003, CSTNET completed upgrading of backbone networks of all the 12 branches of CAS
  • In January 2004, Jiang Mianheng, the Vice President of CAS and the Russian Representative pushed button together in Beijing, announcing the formal opening of "China-Russia Global Ring Network for Advanced Applications Development (GLORIAD)". While, CSTNET will continuously provide high-speed brand supports for advanced applications and devote itself to organization and promotion of cross-disciplinary application and resources shares.
  • In January 2004, Wen Jiabao, Member of CPC Central Standing Committee and Premier of China, paid a visit on 17th to "Report and Exhibition of Computer Network Achievements in Innovation Project of CAS" at CAS, and heard the report of construction status of supporting platform for informatization construction of CAS made by Dr. Yan Baoping, the Director of CNIC, during the visit.
  • On Feb. 20 of 2004, Science Museums of China went to the top of 3,040 websites and was awarded the title of "China Excellent Culture Website" at Great Hall of the People. It is the only one comprehensive popular science website among the 15 awarded websites.
  • In April 2004, CNNIC released standard RFC3743 with respect to "Multi-language Domain Names Registration and Aministration System with Languages of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean" worked out by CNNIC, TWNIC, JPNIC and KRNIC. Thus, China owns the second IETF standard. 
  • In June 2004, CSTNET undertook the work of establishment and migration of email system of CAS.
  • In June 2004, a part of achievements with respect to research on "IPv6 DNS Root Server" undertook by CNNIC were proved of world-advanced level by project appraisement.
  • In November 2004, Hongkong Open Exchange Point —— HK IOEP (HK Light) was esbablished at CAS.
  • On Dec. 21 of 2004, signing ceremony for Shanghai Point of China state-level domain server was held in Shanghai, showing China's first step toward reconstruction of China state-level domain name system as well as a strategic adjustment in China's domain name resolution system. 
  • On Dec. 23 of 2004, Global Domain Root Server was successfully logged in with IPv6 address of CN server, providing supports of CN domain name resolution of IPv6 network user.
  • On Dec. 26 of 2004, CSTNET put Hong Kong ---Japan Gigabit Networks into service.
  • On Jan. 26 of 2005, CSTNET put Hong Kong --- Taiwan Gigabit Line into service.
  • On Apr. 18 of 2005, CNIC held China Globus Seminar.
  • On May 15 of 2005, CNIC was granted as "National Demonstrative Base for Encouraging Youth Approaching Science" by the Central Committee of the Communist Young League, CAS and the National Youth Working Committee.
  • On Jun. 29 of 2005, the 15th Committee Meeting of China's National Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA) was held in Beijing.
  • On Aug. 16 of 2005, CNIC was given the formal name of "China National Grid CAS Center" by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
  • On Sep. 1 of 2005, Science Museums of China Website,, sponsored by CNIC was awarded two prize of "Excellent Science Popularization Website" and "Technical Prize" in "The 1st Evaluation Activity for National Excellent Website and Column of Science Popularization" at China Internet Conference 2005. 
  • On Oct. 28 of 2005, Hong Kong mirror of science and technology network known as Science Museums of China Website, which was the fastest speed network between Hong Kong and the Mainland, were put into service.
  • On Nov. 16 of 2005, Science Museums of China won The World Summit Award of digital science team at Tunis meetings of Summit on the Information Society held by UN.
  • On Nov. 22 of 2005, the project of Construction of Super Computer Grid Node in State 863 Plan passed acceptance. 
  • On Dec. 21 of 2005, Supercomputing Center of CNIC was given the formal name of China National Grid Operation and Administration Center by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
  • On Dec. 26 of 2005, Scientific Database and Its Application System for major special project of CAS' informatization construction during the Tenth Five-Year Plan were approved for acceptance.


  From 2001 to 2005, CSTNET undertook the work of upgrading CAS website, including establishmen, operation and maintenance of infrastructure network of CAS as well as modification of networks of CAS branches and Zhongguancun area.
