NSFC-NSF Sino-America Software Cooperation Research Project

The NSFC-NSF Sino-America Software Cooperation Research Project "EAGER: Fundamental Issues in International Data Placement for Data-intensive Applications: a Laboratory Approach" is led by Prof. Depei Qian from Beihang University (BUAA) in China, and co-led by Prof. Philip Papadopoulos from University of California, San Diego (UCSD) from the U.S. side. In this project, researchers from CNIC, BUAA, UCSD, and University of Wisconsin-Madison will work together to carry out research on several issues including establishing an intercontinental testbed, defining and conducting research on the testbed to see different performance on different data movement and placement policy, and applying theories and algorithms developed in this project into Qinghai Lake e-Science application to verify the achievements.

The project kickoff meeting was held in Beijing on Feb. 26, 2014. During the meeting, Prof. Baoping Yan, Chief Engineer of CNIC, reviewed the history of four partners and long-term support from NSFC and NSF on research in Qinghai Lake. Mr. Zhaotian Zhang, the Deputy Director-general of Department of Information Sciences of NSFC, Mr. William Y. B. Chang, the officer from U.S. National Science Foundation and Mr. Wei Wang, Director of Science & Technology Division of CNIC, addressed on the meeting and expressed their expectations for this project. Prof. Depei Qian and Prof. Philip Papadopoulos introduced the project plan and progress respectively. Prof. Ze Luo also gave a lecture on the progress of CNIC's e-Science initiatives at Qinghai Lake.

The seminar among the four partners was held from Feb. 26 to 28 with the focus on the progress and milestone of the project. Prof. Miron Livny from the University of Wisconsin-Madison gave a lecture entitled on the management of network resources for supporting high-throughput computing on the afternoon of Feb. 28.  

Considerable progress has been made by the end of 2015. Based on the international testbed built in this project, the project team has successfully carried out a series of tasks such as processing of remote sensing images and analysis of videos.
