“Father of the Internet” visited Computer Network Information Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences
Dr. Vinton G. Cerf visited Computer Network Information Center (CNIC) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the birthplace of China’s Internet, on January 14, 2017.
During the visit, Dr. Cerf heard the introduction about CNIC’s historical development and recent progress; and visited the network monitoring system and server room of China Science and Technology Network, the server room of CAS Supercomputing Center, China’s first Internet router and China’s first .CN domain name server.
Dr. Cerf had previously visited CNIC in 1999 and 2004. During his visit this time, Dr. Cerf made positive comments on China’s rapid development in network technologies and high performance computing, and asked questions on various topics of common interest such as cyberinfrastructure maintenance, architecture of China Science and Technology Cloud, open access to research data, cooperation with less developed countries and regions, etc.
CNIC Director General Prof. Liao Fangyu presented Dr. Cerf with a photo collection to memorize his previous visit to CNIC and participation in relevant activities. Other participants included Academician and 2013 Internet Hall of Fame inductee Madam Hu Qiheng, 2014 Internet Hall of Fame inductee Prof. Qian Hualin and Prof. Li Jun from CNIC, Dr. Mao Wei from KNET, Dr. Xiaodong Lee from China Internet Network Information Center and Dr. Nancy Sung from Beijing Office of U.S. National Science Foundation.
