GOSC’s Series of Open Science Engagement in the Golden October

Date: Oct 30, 2024

October witnessed vibrant discussions and promising collaborations between GOSC and its strategic partners in promoting open data across various domains and regions for the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) research. Among these, to enhance disaster risk reduction (DRR) through open science, GOSC co-organized a parallel session at the 2024 IRDR Annual Conference, titled Data and Database for Disaster Risk Reduction, in partnership with the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) programme and the International Knowledge Centre for Engineering Sciences and Technology (IKCEST). This event brought together diverse stakeholders to discuss pressing gaps in existing DRR frameworks and strategies for leveraging open databases to support global DRR efforts. key takeaways include guidelines to develop enhanced open science infrastructures tailored for future disaster mitigation. This GOSC-DRR draft guideline is now open for comments.

Recently, GOSC teams also co-hosted an DBAR-GOSC Session entitled Open Science and Open Data for a Sustainable Future in Suzhou. Co-chaired by GOSC PIFI scholar Dr. Paul F. Uhlir and GOSC PI, Prof. Jianhui LI, this session addressed key topics such as the legal and ethical complexities of cross-border data sharing, blockchain technology for open data, innovative methods promoting open data for SDGs, and open data policies. Besides, GOSC PIFI scholar Dr. Paul F. Uhlir from the National Academy of Sciences, United States, reported on Legal and Ethical Considerations in Cross-Border Data Transfers and Sharing at the CNIC. During his stay, Paul has been working closely with GOSC IPO on several policy studies on open science and open data, with particular topics regarding to AI data ethics, metrics and methods for open data.

Stay tuned for more GOSC engagement, and hopefully to see you all for GOSC dialogues in the near future! (Xueting Li, Lili Zhang)
