GOSC Mongolia Capacity Building at the 2024 International Training Workshop

Date: Nov 18, 2024

Sponsored by the Mongolian Academy of Sciences (MAS) and Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the GOSC International Programme Office of the Computer Network Information Center, CAS, and the Department of Research and Monitoring, MAS co-hosted a GOSC Mongolian training workshop jointly with Committee on Data of the International Science Council (CODATA) in Ulaanbaatar on November 14-15, 2024. As one of the GOSC series, the first Mongolian training workshop is themed on open science infrastructures for disaster risk reduction. As a hybrid workshop, we welcomed Mongolian and international experts from various fields for disaster mitigation.

The esteemed Academician Demberel S., President of MAS, delivered the opening address, underscoring the necessity of open science and international collaboration to empower Mongolian researchers, particularly in addressing the growing hazardous challenges. We hope this training could bring pathways towards Open Science,” he says. The International Cooperation Manager of CNIC, Ms. Yu Chen, expressed the willingness to foster in-depth collaboration between CNIC and global partners for GOSC adoption in support of science innovation.

The workshop involved a range of local and international professionals in disaster risk reduction (DRR) and hands-on e-infrastructure technologies powered by the GOSC testbed. Presentations covered many relevant topics, such as regional climate prediction and modeling, spatial data applications, and advanced big data analytics. Highlights include international disaster policy design, best practices in managing data for resilient disaster management in Mongolia and beyond, and GOSC technical hands-on resource sharing.

This collaborative training workshop milestones the GOSC-Mongolia collaboration in exploring possible pathways toward open science for disaster mitigation. It also lays a solid foundation for building local capacity in disaster risk reduction and advancing the global dialogue on open science. When this workshop approaches the end, the esteemed delegates from MAS will pack for their official visit to CAS soon. Welcome to Beijing! We look forward to more collaborations in the future!
