A GOSC-CODATA DRR training workshop delivered in Chengdu
On September 11, 2025, GOSC IPO and CODATA IDPC co-hosted a training workshop themed on ‘Using Data Policies for Disaster Risk Reduction to Address Multi-Hazards’ during the 2nd International Conference on Smart Informatics and Multi-hazard Reduction (SIMR 2025).
Using CODATA IDPC and GOSC IPO’s expertise, this training encourages open dialogue on aligning data and data systems with SDGs for contemporary disaster risk management. It introduces the Sendai Framework and Hazard Information Profiles (HIPs) as key components of a shared language for DRR. Selected use cases expand crisis data policies, while PROTECT principles are summarized as DRR guidelines.
Hopefully, this training could provide a unified understanding of the international frameworks governing data for DRR, says Francis P. Crawley, chair of CODATA.
The training summary for future DRR data emphasizes adopting an open science approach, utilizing integrated data systems with cutting-edge technologies, such as AI adoption effectively. It also involves mapping the data management lifecycle to the crisis governance process in tailored scenarios. Ultimately, we recommend aligning data efforts with the SDGs—covering People, Planet, Prosperity, Partnership, and Peace—to support the development of a robust DRR data ecosystem over time.
