Construction tasks of the CNGI project includes:
Construction of the nationwide core layer (backbone nodes) and the residence network；
CNGI R&D and Industrialization；
Exemplification of CNGI application.
Accomplishment of CNGI project can provide infrastructure of the next generation network for science and research institutions’ key projects and their practices. It can also explore potential uses of IPv6 network, spurring a series of applications of valuable and forward looking scientific researches.
-Construction of core layer (backbone nodes)
In 2003, CAS & CNC announces the joint bid,successfully obtaining construction work for backbone nodes of seven cities,incl. Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenyang, Changchun, Chengdu and Lanzhou.
-Construction of residence networks
In 2007, CSTNET undertakes the construction for residence networks of CNGI 100 scientific research institutions, focusing on the organization and implementation of the project.
On February 4, 2007, committed by the National Development and Reform Commission （NDRC），the Chinese Academy of Engineering and CNGI committee of experts convene the inspection and acceptance meeting for the CAS & CNC joint project of constructing core layer for CNGI. The inspection and acceptance committee reach an accepting consensus.
On November 13, 2008, the part of CNGI project undertaken by CSTNET, namely the construction for science-and-research residence networks, passes inspection. The development of China’s next-generation Internet has achieved significant breakthrough.
As construction of the project proceeds, over 100 scientific research institutions, including Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, State Seismological Bureau, and National Weather Service, have made interdisciplinary, cross-region, and cross-ministry cooperations in mass data, cooperative work, high-speed transmission, and high-performance calculation. China’s science innovation strategy has obtained more powerful and engine-like motivation of informatization.
