Kick-off for GOSC-IRDR Open Science Collaboration on Disaster Mitigation

Date: Jan 13, 2023
As the new year begins, the Global Open Science Cloud (GOSC) initiative starts a new partnership with the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) to jointly promote global open science practices in the field of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). As a direct response to the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science and A Framework for Global Science (International Science Council, IRDR, UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction), this collaboration is between the IRDR International Programme Office (IRDR IPO) and the GOSC newly established IPO co-founded by the Committee on Data of the International Science Council (CODATA, ISC) and the Computer Network Information Center, Chinese Academy of Science (CNIC, CAS).

Under the umbrella of open science, the IRDR IPO and GOSC IPO share similar responsibilities to support science communication and stakeholder engagement. Therefore, in the upcoming year, a win-win collaboration model will be deployed by the two IPOs to help accelerate social engagement across domains. Expected deliverables may vary, such as joint conferences to bridge gaps between potential stakeholders, training workshops for capacity building, open-science policy briefs for DRR conceptualization, and other knowledge exchange and sharing sessions geared towards DRR data and open-science cloud development.

‘We will take full advantage of the GOSC-IRDR global networks to establish a long-term and sustainable relationship between GOSC and IRDR,’ says Professor Qunli Han, the Executive Director of the IRDR IPO, during the GOSC-IRDR kick-off meeting.

This collaboration will undoubtedly contribute to the GOSC network by promoting the open sharing of data, knowledge, and infrastructures, especially with GOSC validation in the DRR field. A series of GOSC events will follow. So see you all in the new year of hope - the Year of the Rabbit! (Xueting LI, Lili ZHANG)
